Why consider Hair Replacement?
Patients who suffer baldness and hair loss, either from a family history, a change in hormones or aging, may find this procedure beneficial. Balding areas are filled in with the patient's own hair, enhancing appearance and boosting self-confidence.
How it's done
In this surgical procedure, strips of skin containing hair, or grafts, are removed from the scalp and replaced in tiny holes in the bald or thinning area. The grafted hair falls out after the procedure but then grows back and should last as long as the hair from the area in which it was taken. Drugs such as Minoxidil and Finasteride may be applied in conjunction with the procedure to preserve existing hair and stimulate new hair.
Expectations
While it's important to understand that patients will never have the coverage they
had prior to losing their hair, this procedure can enhance the appearance and boost
self-confidence. It's crucial to note that it is both normal and temporary for the transplanted
hair to fall out and it will take another 5 to 6 weeks before new hair growth
begins.
Side Effects/Risks
Common side effects include a temporarily achy and tight scalp, which can be managed
with pain medication. The result may look unnatural in the early stages.
The risks associated with this procedure include infection, excessive bleeding and
wide scars. Sometimes, there is a risk that the hair grafts will not "take," and the
surgery must be repeated. A patchy look may result. Healing Process
Any bandages used will usually be removed the day after the procedure. Patients
can wash their hair within two days of the surgery. Any stitches will be removed
within 7 to 10 days. Light, normal activity can be resumed after several days but
patients may be instructed to avoid vigorous exercise and contact sports for at least
three weeks. |
