Your reasons for considering breast enlargement surgery are as unique as you

It's important to have a good understanding about your personal needs and expectations. You may want to enlarge your breasts to make your body more proportional or your breasts more balanced in size, reshape and enlarge your breasts because they have lost their shape following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, perhaps you have a desire to restore a breast that has been removed due to a mastectomy, or may have breasts that are slightly different sizes which creates asymmetry. It all begins with you. Dr. Case will take the time to understand your goals, seek to educate and help you understand what cosmetic surgery can achieve and guide you throughout the process.

When considering Breast Augmentation there are a number of important decisions to be made:

  1. Breast implant type: saline or silicone gel
  2. Breast implant position: above or below the muscle
  3. Breast implant volume: amount of filler within the implant
  4. Breast implant profile: the degree to which the implant projects
  5. Breast implant size: the implant volume and its width
  6. Breast implant incision placement

Which type of breast implant is right for you? Silicone Gel or Saline?

Considering Silicone Gel Implants/"Gummy Bear Implants"

  1. Feel more like natural breast tissue
  2. Five Projection Profiles: Moderate Classic, Moderate Plus, High Profile, Ultra High Profile and Anatomic Profille (teardrop shape)
  3. Set fill volume for predictable results

Considering Saline Implants

  1. Have a slightly firmer feel than gel
  2. Three Projection Profiles: Moderate, Moderate Plus and High Profile
  3. Offer a flexible fill volume that can be adjusted during surgery

What does a breast implant look like?

The breast implant shown above is a silicone gel implant cut in half.  The breast implant shown
in the upper left position below is a silicone moderate profile breast implant, the upper right position is a silicone moderate plus profile breast implant , the lower left position is a silicone high profile breast implant and the lower right is a silicone ultra high profile silicone breast implant.

What about saline/silicone breast implant size and shape?

Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters, or cc's, not in cup sizes. This is because the size of the implant used depends on the size and shape of the individual woman's chest. Dr. Case will help you determine if you have enough breast and skin tissue to cover the breast implant or if the breast implant you want is too large for your tissue which may cause the breast implant edges to become visible following your surgery.

As you consider which breast surgery is right for you, it is important to keep in mind the selection of procedures available, saline or silicone breast augmentation, a breast lift, removal and replacement of breast implants, breast asymmetry or breast reduction.

Regaining your self-confidence can be essential in helping you feel attractive. Equally important is your commitment to regular exercise, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Case and his staff will be your partners in looking and feeling great.

Breast Aesthetic issues with Breast Augmentation

Additional aesthetic considerations with breast augmentation surgery are as unique as you.

Breast Shape: Breast shapes vary with each patient and some patients may require more than a breast augmentation. For example, a tuberous breast can be narrow and long. In this instance, your breast shape can be enhanced with implants but may require the fibrous bands within your breasts to be surgically divided.

Breast Droop: This term refers to the amount of sagging one may have, or the condition where the nipple may be below the breast crease. Breast augmentation may not affect nipple height or raise droopy nipples. Implants may lower the breast crease and the position of the nipple in relation to the crease. The treatment for breast droop often times is a breast lift.

Breast Asymmetry: All patients have some breast asymmetry. This refers to breast shape, nipple size, position, height and shape, one breast may be higher, one breast may be shaped differently, and your breast crease may be asymmetric in shape or position. Breast augmentation will improve breast size but not improve most other breast asymmetries.

A few tips for selecting Breast Implant size

Selecting a breast implant size may be a hard decision for some patients. As implants increase in size with volume, they also increase in diameter and projection.

FYI: Bra cup sizes are not standardized. You might be a "C" cup in one bra or a "B" cup in another. Many cup sizes vary among bra manufacturers as well as among a single bra manufacturer. Discussing cup size will give a general idea of your goals but not a guarantee of final breast size or bra cup size.

Proportion and Size: Some women may choose to have breast augmentation surgery to make their breasts more proportionate to the rest of their body while others might want breast augmentation surgery to be larger or smaller than the proportionate body size. The decision on breast augmentation size should be your decision. Not everyone may share the same ideas for breast aesthetics.

Don't be modest: If your goal is to have large breast, then you should be open and confident about your goals.

Should I go 25 ml larger? Although this number sounds like a lot, is less than a fluid ounce. Sometimes you might struggle with going up a breast implant size, if so, just remember most women come back to their post operative follow up visit and say "I wish I had picked the larger breast implant."

Frequently asked questions about Saline and Silicone Breast Augmentation in Tucson

How much do breast implants weigh?
A common formula to estimate the weight of saline and silicone breast implants is: 1 ounce = 30 cc's. For example, a 300 cc implant weighs 10 ounces. Implant weight may vary with implant size.

Do implants influence the occurrence of breast cancer?
Studies have shown that patients with breast implants are not at greater risk of developing breast cancer then those without implants.

Are tanning salons or sunbathing allowed after breast augmentation?
These activities may make scar tissue more visible or darken the incision area, but will not harm the breast implants.

Can I smoke?
Smoking can compromise recovery by reducing blood flow and oxygen to the surgical area. When the blood supply is reduced, tissues heal more slowly and irregularly. Your tissues need blood and oxygen supply to heal. Please discuss any concerns you may have at your consultation.

Trends in Breast Augmentation and Fat Transfer in Tucson

Using your own fat to increase breast size is just one of the growing trends in cosmetic surgery's popular procedure, breast augmentation. Cell assisted lipotransfer is a technique where extra stem cells are put into the fat that is injected into the breast. Some may call this "green cosmetic surgery" because fat from liposuction procedures is recycled and not thrown away. Since the patient's own fat is used, the procedure is frequently called a "natural" breast lift or augmentation. Women who are considering this procedure, are limited in how large you can increase breast size.
