Why consider a Facelift?

A facelift is designed to correct multiple signs of aging in the face and neck that include sagging and deep creases across the middle region, loss of muscle tone that can create loose skin and excess fat deposits under the chin and jaw. The procedure improves facial tone, uplifts contours and restores a more youthful appearance.

How it's done

A highly personalized procedure, a facelift begins with an evaluation of skin, muscle and bone structure to determine the approach needed. Incisions often begin in the hairline at the temples, continue in front of and around the ear, and end in the lower posterior scalp. Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck, and underlying tissue is repositioned. The skin is then redraped over the uplifted area with any excess removed. A second incision under the chin may be necessary to smooth muscle bands in the front of the neck. Skin resurfacing procedures may be combined with a facelift to boost texture and tone.

Expectations

A facelift will not change the basic appearance, but restores it to a younger version. Most patients find the benefits of a facelift to be long-lasting. Sun protection and a healthy lifestyle will help preserve the appearance.

Side Effects/Risks

Common side effects of a facelift include swelling, numbness and discomfort that can be controlled with medication. The skin will be likely bruised or discolored. Facial movements also may be temporarily restricted.

The risks of a facelift include infection, bleeding under the skin (hematoma), correctable hair loss at the incisions, facial nerve injury with weakness, facial asymmetry, skin loss with scarring, numbness and risks associated with anesthesia.

Healing Process

Following facelift surgery, a drain tube may be used overnight to drain any excess blood that collects under the skin of the neck. Facelift incisions heal well within a week and normal activity can be resumed after 3 weeks. Incision lines may take up to 6 months to mature and refine. It may take several months for swelling to fully subside.
