Why consider Facial Implants?

Facial implants are designed to enhance and improve the physical structure of the face, most commonly in the chin or cheek region. Implants can help patients bothered by a small chin, a weak jaw or the lack of facial contours to bring a more proportionate, structural appearance.

How it's done

Chin - An incision is made deep in the lower lip or beneath the chin to create a pocket for the implant placement.

Cheek - An incision is made through the mouth to place the cheek implant. When performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift, alternate incision sites include the lower eyelid or the hairline.

Expectations

Implants provide almost immediate visible results, yet the full improvements may be difficult to see due to initial swelling. As patients adjust to the new features, they should notice a permanent change in facial structure, better symmetry between features as well as more distinctive contours.

Side Effects/Risks

Common side effects include swelling, numbness and discomfort that can be controlled with medication. Facial movements may be restricted or impaired.

The risks associated with facial implants include infection, excessive scar tissue formation and firmness around the implant, the shifting of implants, minor nerve injury and risks associated with anesthesia.

Healing Process

The initial wound closure may take 7 to 10 days, at which time any sutures will be removed if necessary. Normal activity can be resumed in three weeks. It may take several months for swelling to fully subside.
