How it's done
Male breast reduction can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, on an outpatient basis. Fat or excess breast tissue can be removed with liposuction, excision, or a combination of procedures. An incision is usually made under the areola. Through the incision, excess tissue, fat and skin are removed from around the areola and from the bottom and sides of the breast. Liposuction may be used when the gynecomastia is caused mostly by excessive fatty tissue.
Side Effects/Risks
Common side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness and a burning sensation.
The risks associated with this surgery include infection, fluid accumulation, injury to the skin, rippling or bagginess of the skin, asymmetry, pigment changes that can occur if exposed to the sun and excessive scarring. A second procedure may be necessary to remove additional tissue.
Healing Process
Following surgery, the breast area will be swollen and bruised. An elastic pressure garment may be needed for the first three weeks. Patients can resume light activity and return to work within 3 to 7 days after the surgery.
